Meet 20-Year-Old Augie, The Oldest Golden Retriever In History
Some dogs defy the odds and live long, fulfilling lives beyond expectations, and Augie, a Golden Retriever, was one of those rare examples.

A Special Celebration
In August 2020, Augie, a Golden Retriever from Tennessee, celebrated her 20th birthday—a remarkable milestone for any dog, especially for her breed.
Her family marked the occasion by throwing a joyful party for Augie and her furry siblings, complete with a dog-friendly carrot cake.
Augie’s accomplishment of living two full decades made her the oldest Golden Retriever in recorded history.
While most Golden Retrievers typically live up to 12-14 years, and few surpass 18 or 19, Augie’s longevity amazed everyone around her.
Despite some kidney issues in her senior years, she continued to enjoy little walks and the company of her canine siblings.
From Struggles To A Loving Home
Though Augie lived a wonderful life in her later years, her early days were filled with uncertainty.
As a rescue dog, she had trouble finding a permanent home, with two families turning her away before she found the love and stability she deserved.
Her life changed forever when Steve and Jennifer Hetterscheidt welcomed her into their family.
Surrounded by love and affection, Augie quickly became an important part of their lives.
She bonded with her new furry siblings, enjoyed games of fetch, and accompanied her family on exciting road trips that gave her a sense of adventure.
A Bittersweet Farewell
As the years went on, Augie’s health gradually declined, and just before her 21st birthday, her body couldn’t keep up any longer.
On March 31, 2021, Augie crossed the rainbow bridge, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience.
Jennifer shared the sad news on Instagram, saying, “It is with profound sadness that I tell you Miss Augie passed away. Augie, in her own way, told me her little body just couldn’t go on any more, that she was so very, very tired, and it was okay to let her go.“
Jennifer found comfort in imagining that their other dog, Sherman, who had passed away earlier, was waiting to greet Augie with open paws at the Rainbow Bridge, wagging his tail and welcoming her with love.
