Deaf & Blind Puppy And Her Guide Dog Brother Find Forever Home Together
At the Helen Woodward Animal Center (HWAC) in San Diego, we witnessed a heartwarming story of brotherly love.
Star and Denver, two terrier mix puppies, are not just adorable; they share a bond that is both inspiring and extraordinary, particularly because of Star’s special needs.
More Than Just Playmates
At first glance, Star and Denver might seem like typical playful puppies, bursting with energy and curiosity.

However, Star is both deaf and almost entirely blind, facing challenges that most puppies never encounter.
Despite these hurdles, Star lives a joyful and exuberant life, thanks in large part to Denver’s constant support and guidance.
Denver: The Guiding Star
Denver’s role in Star’s life goes beyond that of a sibling; he acts as her eyes and ears, ensuring she navigates her world safely.
“When Star seems lost, Denver will run over to her and check in with her,” explained Jackie Kelleher, the social media manager at HWAC.
This vigilant care includes nudging Star to reassure her of his presence, allowing her to use her sense of smell to find him whenever she feels disoriented.
The Power of Play
Their play is a dance of communication and care.
The siblings enjoy tumbling together, playing with rope toys, and chewing on stuffed toys.

Through these interactions, Denver not only provides companionship but also helps Star experience the world more fully.
His attentiveness allows Star to explore and play with confidence, knowing that her brother is always nearby to support her.
A Journey to Safety
The story of Star and Denver began under less fortunate circumstances.
They were found, along with their mother and six siblings, abandoned in a rural part of Louisiana. A compassionate couple discovered them and took care of the family until the puppies were weaned.

Recognizing the need for more specialized care, they contacted a rescue organization, which arranged for the puppies to travel nearly 2,000 miles to HWAC in early February.
Seeking a Forever Home
While their siblings have since found their forever homes, Star and Denver remain at the center, waiting for the perfect family to come along.
The rescue hopes to find adopters, preferably local, who can provide the dedicated care these special pups need.
Star, for all her independence and bravery, relies deeply on Denver, whose vigilant presence allows her to navigate her surroundings safely.

As the months went by, all 6 of their siblings were adopted. But the dynamic duo Star & Denver were still waiting for their new adoptive family.
The Adoption
And finally, the perfect family appeared!
Sheri and Art Armenbdariz couldn’t wait to adopt these 2 fur babies, and bring them into their loving home in Encinitas, California.

But Sheri and Art were not the only ones moved by the story of these 2 pups.
An anonymous donor completely covered the adoption fee for the dogs, and Blue Buffalo Pet Food came through and gifted a 1-year supply of dog food!
A Bond for Life
As they grow and learn, it’s clear that Star and Denver’s connection is a lifelong bond, filled with love and mutual care.
“Denver will always be vigilant of her needs even while they are around humans” Kelleher noted, highlighting the depth of their relationship.
Star and Denver’s story is a touching reminder of the incredible ways animals can adapt and support each other through life’s challenges.
