Woman Signs Up As A Shelter Volunteer And Ends Up Adopting The Most Overlooked Dog

That’s exactly what happened when one woman signed up to volunteer at a shelter.
A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything
Katherine Ellis and her partner, Jake, visited the Humane Society of Charlotte, North Carolina, with the intention of volunteering and fostering.
However, their plans took an unexpected turn on their very first day.
While touring the shelter and meeting countless hopeful pups, Katherine’s attention was drawn to one special dog.

Santiago, the oldest and most overlooked pup in the shelter, captured her heart instantly.
“We had absolutely no intention of getting a dog, but day 1 of me signing up to volunteer at @humanecharlotte we walked in and Jake said, ‘I am not leaving without this dog,’” Kate shared in an Instagram post.

Without hesitation, the couple decided to adopt Santiago, who they later renamed Rookie.
His joy was evident as he left the kennel behind, eager to embrace his new life.
Rookie’s New Life Full Of Love And Adventure
Within days, Rookie became an inseparable part of Katherine and Jake’s family. He adjusted so well, it was as if he had been with them all along.

“He is the friendliest, most loving, and fastest learning pup I have ever met and have never bought something better for $175. Welcome to the family Rookie,” Katherine wrote.
On their way home, they made sure to gather everything Rookie would need—a cozy bed, nutritious food, and plenty of love.
The moment he stepped into their warm home, his happiness was priceless.

Katherine couldn’t have been more grateful for that day at the shelter, which brought her and Rookie together.
Though she had once imagined adopting a small, non-shedding dog, meeting Rookie proved that reality can be even better than dreams.
Every day, the family embarks on new adventures together. From city walks and puppuccino treats to (sometimes unwelcome) baths, Rookie thrives in his new life.
