Senior Dog Abandoned At 19 Finds Comfort And Love In His Final Years

Senior Dog Abandoned At 19 Finds Comfort In His Final Years

A beautiful 19-year-old Cattle Dog mix named Ace was surrendered to the Humane Society of Sonoma County.

Life wasn’t kind to this senior dog; soon after he arrived, a devastating wildfire swept through Sonoma County, California. With space needed for incoming animal evacuees, Ace and other unadopted dogs were transferred to the Sacramento SPCA.

This unexpected move brought him 150 miles away from home, where he now hoped for a second chance.

Ace’s Journey Begins

News of a 19-year-old dog in need spread quickly.

The rescue posted him and I didn’t know what kind of dog he was, I just knew that he was a 19-year-old dog. I immediately called and asked to foster him,” said Bonnie, who became his foster mom, to The Dodo.

Despite Ace’s age on paper, he acted much younger.

When I asked to foster him, my only intent was to get him out of the shelter. Because he’s nineteen. He’s been through enough, and he needs to get into a home,” Bonnie explained to The Dodo.

At first, Ace was distant, showing little interest in attention or affection. But after three weeks, his playful side began to emerge, and he started interacting with Bonnie’s other dogs.

Ace Finds Joy Again

He loved his toys—any kind of toy—and even though his age showed in his dental needs and limited vision, his spirit remained youthful.

Ace thinks he’s two. It’s like a teenager or a much younger dog,” Bonnie joked.

After undergoing dental surgery, Ace started to warm up to his foster mom.

When he first came up and put his head on my lap and started nuzzling me, it tugged at my heart. That is when I decided that I was going to adopt him,” Bonnie recalled.

Just before Christmas, they made it official, and Bonnie’s only wish was for Ace to be happy.

Life At The Lucky Ones Ranch

However, Ace’s quirky personality didn’t mesh as expected. Bonnie realized that Ace was more independent than she anticipated.

After he bit her, she decided to surrender him to us. We are glad we kept in touch with her, as Cattle Dogs are not for everyone!” shared Lucky Ones Ranch, an animal sanctuary, on Facebook.

At the sanctuary, Ace was free to be himself.

He preferred toys over people interaction. He did not want to be petted and loved on. And that was ok with us. At his age of 19 years old, we just wanted him to be happy and do what he was most comfortable in doing,” the sanctuary wrote.

Ace spent his days happily playing with toys and enjoying life at his own pace.

Ace’s Final Chapter

For one year and four months, Ace lived happily at Lucky Ones Ranch, doing what he loved most. Surrounded by his toys and the peaceful environment, Ace finally found contentment.

At the age of 20, Ace passed away peacefully, surrounded by the things he cherished most—his toys and the care of those who loved him.
