Shelter’s Loudest Dog Falls Silent When Reunited with His Dad
This is the touching story of Goose, a purebred Blue Tick Hound who was abandoned not once, not twice, but three times.
Each return to the shelter broke the staff’s hearts as he cried and howled in sadness.
But in the end, he eventually found a permanent home, and not just any home.
A Unique Hound With A Distinctive Voice
Goose is a purebred Blue Tick Hound with a unique appearance and an even more distinctive bark that resembles a howl.
Jill Jones, director of the Adopt-An-ANGEL Animal Shelter in Wilmington, North Carolina, explains that Goose’s honking cries reflect his emotions.
“He screams when he feels anxious and abandoned. If he’s quiet, it’s because he’s happy,” she told The Dodo.
Sadly, Goose’s life has been filled with upheaval. He has found himself homeless on three separate occasions.
First Shelter Stay
Goose’s first visit to the North Carolina shelter was as an injured puppy.
In a tragic accident, his mother bit off his ear during feeding, leaving him with a distinctive look.
Despite this, Goose was adopted by a family who loved him dearly. However, circumstances changed, and Goose returned to the shelter.
Second Shelter Stay
The family that initially adopted Goose had to give him up after their baby was born with a rare skin disorder that could be life-threatening in case of an accident or wound. And Goose’s tussles with the other dog posed a threat to the baby’s health.
Heartbroken, the family returned Goose to the shelter when he was one and a half years old. The shelter staff noticed his mournful howls and cries, reflecting his sense of abandonment.
“He’s got a hound bark that could seriously win contests,” Jones told The Dodo.
Goose was soon adopted again, but his luck didn’t hold.
Third Shelter Stay
The young couple who adopted Goose eventually divorced. One partner surrendered Goose to the shelter without informing the other.
His dad, who had moved to Florida, was unaware that Goose was back in North Carolina. When the shelter discovered this, they realized Goose’s distress was even greater as you can hear in the video below.
Determined to find Goose a permanent home, the shelter featured him at an upcoming adoption fair.
A Miraculous Reunion
At the adoption fair, one of Goose’s dad’s best friends recognized him. He immediately sent a picture to Goose’s dad, who was shocked to see his beloved dog back at the shelter.
Determined to reunite with Goose, his dad drove from Florida to North Carolina.
The reunion between Goose and his dad was emotional and heartwarming. The shelter posted a video of the event, noting, “Here, you see Goose, quiet and speechless as he greets his Dad! Goose, speechless without his anxious howl. Get your hankies ready!”
Although Goose’s dad couldn’t keep him permanently, Goose’s grandpa stepped in to adopt him.
Now, Goose spends his days running around the yard and playing with his doggie cousins.
