Woman Discovers Her Missing Dog Living A New Life Then Gets A Surprising Call

When Felecia Schoonover’s dog, Memphis, went missing, she was devastated and searched tirelessly for him.

Years later, she stumbled upon a photo of Memphis with another family, uncovering a surprising truth about his whereabouts.

An Unexpected Adventure

Memphis joined his family as a two-year-old bundle of joy, quickly making his love for exploration known.

“He has always been an opportunist who likes adventure. His most memorable rendezvous [was] a trip to the bar a few blocks over, where he spent the night enjoying popcorn with some of the patrons. He’s an extremely friendly dog, so he often got picked up by strangers until I’d find out where he was and retrieve him,” Memphis’ mom, Felecia shared with The Dodo.

In April 2019, Memphis escaped again while Felecia showered and her kids played outside. Afterward, he was nowhere to be found.

“We drove up and down the neighborhood yelling his name with no luck. I spent the next week posting on Facebook and periodically checking the animal shelter. Over the years, I’ve periodically checked their website and Facebook page in hopes of finding him,” Felecia explained.

Despite years apart, Felecia’s love for Memphis never wavered, and her hope to reunite with him remained strong.

A Recognizable Face

One day, while scrolling online, Felecia stumbled upon a missing dog poster featuring a face she knew well—it was Memphis!

His new family had posted about his escape and eventual return. Felecia was overjoyed to know he had been loved and cared for all these years.

“I was so excited to know that he had been cared for over the years. I made a post in the same group regarding his origins, and someone on there informed me of how his new family came to have him — someone had snatched him up and sold him to them. I didn’t want to rip him away from a family who loved him and missed him the same way I loved and missed him,” she explained.

Understanding the pain of losing him, Felecia chose not to disrupt his life with his new family. She left a note with the local shelter asking them to contact her if Memphis ever turned up in their care.

“I never contacted the family as I didn’t feel there was a need to. I wanted him to be happy, and they had been providing that. It hurt my heart that he had been across town this whole time, but it wouldn’t be fair to uproot him,” she added.

Back Where He Belongs

Months later, Felecia received an unexpected call from the shelter—they had Memphis and wanted to know if she wanted him back. She said yes immediately.

Although she had adopted another dog since losing Memphis, she was ready to give him the home he had always known.

“Baby sister loves him and he’s quite fond of giving her kisses. He’s the same old Memphis we all remembered. His favorite place is still next to Mom on the couch, he still loves rooting under furniture in search of hidden crumbs and he still loves cuddling up with my son, just like when they were young pups together,” Felecia shared.

Memphis’s long journey brought him back to where he belonged. Now, he can settle into a life full of love, leaving his adventuring days behind.
