Ohio Law Enforcement Salutes K9 Tommy One Last Time After Euthanasia

In an emotional farewell that touched hearts across Ohio, K9 Tommy, a dedicated German Shepherd, was honored by his handler, fellow officers, and numerous K9 units.

After seven years of loyal service with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Tommy’s battle with aggressive cancer led to a heartbreaking decision to end his suffering.

A Faithful Servant and Protector

Tommy served alongside Officer Jeremy Berger, proving himself not just as a capable law enforcement dog but as a cherished partner.

His years on the force were marked by bravery and dedication, making him a respected figure among his peers and the communities he helped to protect.

A Solemn Tribute

After 7 years of service, Tommy’s health started to decline, rendering him unable to perform his duties and causing him significant pain.

Officer Berger made the difficult decision to euthanize him. This decision, though heartbreaking, was made out of love and the desire to ease Tommy’s suffering.

The respect Tommy garnered throughout his career was evident in his final moments.

Law enforcement officers and their K9 partners from across Ohio gathered outside the Blanchard Valley Veterinary Clinic to pay their respects.

The solemn assembly formed a guard of honor as Tommy was carried out on a stretcher, draped with a flag, a symbol of his service and sacrifice.

A Devastating Farewell

The farewell was especially hard on Officer Berger and his family, who were the last to say goodbye.

The bond between a handler and his K9 is deep, as these partners share experiences that forge an unbreakable connection of mutual trust and affection.

The final radio call for Tommy underscored this bond:

“You were a faithful partner to 3280, Officer Tommy. Thank you for being a good boy and protecting your partner and the citizens of Ohio. Your watch has now ended. Rest well. You are gone, but never forgotten.”

Tommy’s Legacy

The ceremony and the outpouring of support from the law enforcement community underscored the impact Tommy had on those he worked with and served.

As the officers paid tribute with a minute of silence, the emotional weight of the moment was palpable.

Tommy was more than just a dog or a tool of the force; he was a beloved companion, a hero in his own right, whose legacy of bravery and loyalty will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Rest well, Tommy. Your duty is done, but your memory and the paw prints you left on our hearts will never fade.

1 year after losing Tommy, Officer Berger was lucky to welcome a new member of the team, a beautiful 13 months old Dutch Shepherd.
