Louisiana Man Finds An Old Dog Grave That Leave Him In Tears

In the quiet Kiroli Park in West Monroe, Louisiana, local Zach Medlin and his one-eyed Staffordshire terrier Serena have unearthed a touching piece of local history.

While Serena was distracted by ducks at the nearby lake, Medlin stumbled upon a small, hidden grave marker that revealed a story of grief and loving memory.

A Surprising Find

As Serena played, Medlin noticed something unusual.

A small square stone peeking out from under the fallen leaves and pine needles. Curiosity piqued, he decided to investigate, uncovering the stone and brushing away the pine straw that obscured an inscription.

It read: “Buddie, 1928 — 1941. Born a dog / Died a gentleman.”

The poignant words sparked Medlin’s interest in the history of Buddie and his final resting place in this 160-acre public park.

The Legend and the Truth

The inscription hinted at a life well-lived and a dog deeply cherished.

Medlin imagined Buddie as a steadfast companion through challenging times, perhaps even the Great Depression, touching the hearts of his owners with loyalty and courage.

Local lore further romanticized Buddie’s legacy, suggesting he was once a mascot for the Boy Scouts at a summer camp previously held in the park.

According to the stories, Buddie heroically barked to alert Scouts of a drowning boy, leading to a dramatic rescue.

However, deeper research into Buddie’s past painted a different picture.

Lora Peppers, a contributor to Findagrave.com, found a handwritten note from 1993 that traced Buddie back to his owners, Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Jones of Monroe.

The note described Buddie as a beautiful Irish setter who loved to run freely in Kiroli Park. When he passed away, Mr. Jones chose to bury him in the park—a place that undoubtedly held special significance for both Buddie and his family.

Buddie’s Legacy Lives On

Regardless of the true story – whether Buddie was a hero in a dramatic rescue or simply a beloved pet – one thing is for sure.

Buddy was a very good boy.

His memorial in Kiroli Park is a reminder of the bond between humans and their canine companions, and allows his memory to live on.

For Medlin, discovering Buddie’s grave was a heartwarming experience, reinforcing the idea that all dogs, in life and in memory, deserve recognition and respect.
