Kayaker Was Heading Into The Lake When He Noticed Something Unbelievable

One woman headed out for a peaceful day of kayaking at Lake Thurmond in South Carolina.
But before her boat ever touched the water, she noticed something unusual near the shoreline.
An Unexpected Discovery
Right by the edge of the lake, she spotted what looked like four strange mud-covered lumps. Curious, she walked closer—and was stunned by what she found.

Lying there in the dirt were four tiny, hairless puppies, huddled together and barely moving.
Though they seemed nervous, the pups allowed her to help. She gently scooped them up and brought them to safety without hesitation.
Soon, the little group arrived at Final Victory Animal Rescue, where the staff couldn’t believe what they were seeing. The pups were in terrible shape.

“They were all extremely skinny and suffering from severe demodex mange. Most of their fur was gone,” said Leslie Rider Osmanski, one of the rescue workers, in an interview with The Dodo.
The team quickly got to work, giving the puppies gentle medical baths to ease their discomfort and help their healing begin.
Afterward, the pups seemed to relax just a bit, sensing they were finally safe.

Though their skin condition was serious, they were lucky—none of them had any major health problems beyond that.
A Fresh Start
The rescue staff gave them a nickname: “the water’s edge puppies,” in honor of where they were found.
As they settled into their new shelter space, the pups were given names that matched their lakeside rescue: Kayak, Canoe, Paddle Board, and Raft.

Everyone wondered how these four little ones ended up at the lake. While no one could say for sure, it was likely they’d been abandoned there.
Thankfully, now they had a second chance.
As their skin started to heal and their strength returned, it became clear these puppies were going to be just fine. And soon, they were ready for adoption.

Paddle Board and Raft, the two boys, were quickly matched with loving families. Their new lives had begun.
Kayak and Canoe, the two sweet girls, were still waiting for their perfect match. But with their adorable personalities and growing confidence, the shelter team felt sure they’d be adopted soon too.
