Family Brings Home A Shelter Dog And Quickly Realizes Something Shocking About Her
A few years ago, Lieschen O’Neill visited the Lawrence Humane Society in Kansas with no intention of adopting. However, like many others, she couldn’t leave without taking home a dog.
That dog, Belle, didn’t just become part of her life—she completely changed it.
Belle is far from an ordinary rescue dog, and her unique charm makes everyone love her even more.
Belle’s Quirky Appearance
When Belle turned one and reached her adult size, her family began noticing something unusual about her appearance.

Her eyes gave her a “shocked” expression that became more noticeable over time. Concerned yet curious, her family took her to the vet.
The vet explained that Belle’s distinctive look likely came from complications during birth, which caused her muscles to develop slightly differently.

“As a result, everything was kind of pulled back a little bit. So her eyes kind of look a little bit bug-eyed, but everything’s there and she’s totally fine,” Lieschen shared.
Belle’s condition doesn’t affect her quality of life. Occasionally, she needs prescription eye drops for dryness, but otherwise, she’s healthy and happy.
Beautiful In Her Own Way
From the moment Lieschen first saw Belle at the shelter, it was love at first sight. Belle ran to the kennel door, eager for attention, and won Lieschen’s heart immediately.

“She just jumped up in my lap, licked my face, and at that moment, we knew we were going home with Belle,” Lieschen recalled.
Belle’s quirky looks and sweet personality made her an irreplaceable part of the family. She’s become an excellent companion, a loving pet, and the perfect addition to their lives.

One of Belle’s quirks is her fascination with slippers.

“She adores slippers so much, she loves to carry them around. She’ll maybe pick up one slipper or two slippers, sometimes even three slippers, and just carry them around,” Lieschen shared.
Other than her unique appearance and slipper obsession, Belle enjoys treats, naps, cuddles, and being with her family.
