Marine Veteran from Long Island Surprised With Service Dog For Veterans Day

In celebration of the 94th Veterans Day, Long Island war veteran Joe Cipriano received a life-changing gift—a service dog named Marlee.

During an emotional ceremony, Joe was officially handed Marlee’s leash, marking the beginning of their new journey together.

This heartfelt gesture was a symbol of gratitude for Joe’s service and a second chance for both him and Marlee to transform each other’s lives.

Marlee and I are tight buddies. He is my boy,” Cipriano shared, reflecting on the deep bond they’ve already formed.

A Second Chance For Marlee And Cipriano

Marlee, a 3-year-old Poodle, was days away from being euthanized when fate intervened.

Thanks to Paws of War, a New York-based animal protection organization, and New York Community Bank, Marlee’s life was saved and transformed.

After an extensive evaluation, Marlee was selected to become a service dog, trained to assist a veteran in need.

Little did anyone know that this dog, once unwanted, would play a vital role in another life—a Marine veteran named Cipriano.

Their bond was instant and undeniable, leading to a heartwarming story of redemption and companionship.

An Incredible Dog Story

Marlee’s story is nothing short of miraculous.

Rescued by Paws of War from a shelter in Meade County, Kentucky, he was just days away from being euthanized.

His future turned bright when he was evaluated and found suitable for service dog training. Marlee’s path crossed with Cipriano, a Marine veteran, and from their first meeting, a special connection formed.

Cipriano, who had been struggling with his mental health, couldn’t believe that such a wonderful dog was once unwanted.

He needed something as much as I needed something, and we are imprinted on each other in a way that I would never have thought it was possible,” Cipriano shared with PIX11.

A Veteran’s Lifeline

Cipriano, honorably discharged from the Marines in 2010, has faced numerous challenges since returning to civilian life.

Mental health struggles often left him isolated, unable to navigate day-to-day activities. That all changed when Marlee entered his life.

The service dog offers Cipriano the support and companionship he desperately needed.

There would be times when I was in the bedroom for days and wouldn’t come out, but that doesn’t happen anymore. Marlee has been the best thing for me and my family,” Cipriano said.

Marlee not only helps him emotionally but also enables him to engage in everyday tasks that once seemed impossible. Wherever Cipriano goes, Marlee is by his side.

Their bond is more than just a service relationship; it’s a deep connection that has made both their lives better.

Marlee isn’t just a pet; he’s a true companion, a loyal friend, and part of Cipriano’s family.

The joy and fulfillment Marlee has brought to Cipriano’s life are beyond words.

Marlee and I are tight buddies, him and I. He is my boy! He is an amazing living being, is what he is. He’s not even a dog. He instantaneously became a part of the family, and we became a part of his life as well,” said Cipriano.

A Heartfelt Thanks

This heartwarming transformation was made possible through the generosity of the New York Community Bank and Paws of War.

During a surprise celebration, the COO of NY Community Bank, Julie Signorille, expressed how moved they were by the impact they made on Cipriano’s life.

However, as the animal protection organization reminds us, there are still many veterans and first responders waiting for service dogs to help them overcome similar challenges.
