US Veteran Tries To Sell His Car To Get His Dogs Back, Then Gets A Wonderful Surprise

A US veteran broke into tears after learning that complete strangers got together to help him reunite with his two dogs after he couldn’t afford to get them back from a shelter.

This emotional story of loyalty, love and community support has captured hearts worldwide, and it will surely move you too.

A Sudden Separation

James Pack is a Vietnam veteran living in Delaware, and dad to 2 dogs, Bailey and Blaze.

On September 25, a significant medical emergency struck – James suffered a major heart attack.

This prompted the First State Animal Center and SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) to take his dogs into safekeeping.

Normally, such holds last about five days. But given their owner’s severe health issues and uncertain recovery, the shelter extended this period.

After 20 days, with their owner’s future still in jeopardy, the decision was made to sterilize Bailey and Blaze and put them up for adoption.

The Struggle to Reunite

Despite his health and financial challenges, James’ determination to bring Bailey and Blaze back home never wavered.

He frequently contacted the shelter, assuring them of his intent to retrieve his cherished dogs.

Unfortunately, James recovery took too long, and while he was getting medical treatment, his dogs had to be put up for adoption. And as per the rule, an adoption fee needs to be paid to get the dogs.

When James was finally well enough to visit the shelter, in December, he learned about the adoption fee. Sadly the veteran didn’t have the $250 needed for his dogs return.

That’s when he decided to sell his car for scrap, to raise the money.

An Unexpected Gesture of Kindness

The reunion at the shelter was touching.

Melissa Eagle, an employee familiar with the owner’s story, witnessed the profound connection as he sat on the floor with Bailey and Blaze, who joyously licked his face.

Moved by the scene and the owner’s dedication, Melissa contacted other volunteers to help cover the adoption fees.

One generous volunteer stepped forward to pay the entire fee, while others donated dog essentials like food, toys, and gift cards.

The Reunion

The moment the owner learned about these acts of kindness was captured on video and quickly went viral on Facebook, garnering over 841,000 views and 22,735 shares in just 24 hours.

The video showcased not only his shock and gratitude but also the broad community support rallying to help him rebuild his life.

When James came into PetSmart to see his dogs, a surprise was waiting for him. The employees gave a warm welcome to James, and told him what happened. He was getting his dogs back!

As a Vietnam veteran who had lost nearly everything – his health, home, and almost his dogs – the outpouring of support served as a beautiful Christmas gift from many who had never met him.

Continuing the Spirit of Giving

The widespread attention from the viral video has only increased the desire to help.

Efforts are ongoing to facilitate donations and support to assist the veteran further in his journey of recovery and rebuilding. This story proves once again how small acts of generosity can transform lives in significant ways.

In the end, Bailey and Blaze are back where they belong, with an owner who loves them unconditionally.
