Pup Was Heartbroken After Her New Family Returned Her To The Shelter Due To An Unexpected Reason
Kelly didn’t have the easiest start in life.
She had been used by a breeder who only saw her as a way to make money. When she was no longer “useful,” they abandoned her without a second thought.
She wandered the streets alone—hungry, weak, and heartbroken. Still, Kelly held onto hope.
Even after being treated so badly, she believed someone kind might come along and help her.
A Second Chance Begins
That hope became real when the team from the Humane Society of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, spotted her and stepped in to help.

Seeing how thin and neglected she was broke their hearts. But from the moment she walked through their doors, Kelly began to show just how special she was. She was full of love despite all she’d been through.
“Kelly is an absolute love bug and enjoys being with people and getting affection. She is goofy and likes to play with chew toys and go for walks,” said Susan Leonti, the shelter’s digital marketing specialist, in an interview with Newsweek.

Hoping to help her find a family fast, the shelter shared a video of Kelly’s story on social media. It showed her standing in her kennel, wagging her tail, hopeful as ever.
And that’s when something amazing happened.
A Bittersweet Detour
A couple saw her video and instantly fell in love. They came to the shelter the next day, ready to adopt their first dog together.
Kelly was overjoyed. She said goodbye to the staff, her tail wagging nonstop. Her big moment had come.
But sadly, the happiness didn’t last. Shortly after arriving at her new home, the couple discovered that one of them was severely allergic to dogs.

With heavy hearts, they returned Kelly to the shelter.
Back in her kennel, Kelly seemed crushed. She cried out when staff walked by, her eyes full of confusion and sadness.

“Since being returned, Kelly has had such a sad and worried look on her face. When we walk by her kennel, she cries out to us and has a look of desperation in her eyes. It is simply heartbreaking to see,” Leonti shared.
Everyone at the shelter adored her. But what Kelly truly needed was someone to love her forever.
A Happy Ending At Last
About a month after her story was shared on social media and featured in Newsweek, Kelly’s wish finally came true.
