Shelter Dog Thought He’d Finally Found A Family, Only To Be Returned Less Than 72 Hours After
When Scrabble, a shelter dog, finally thought he’d found his forever home, he was unexpectedly returned just 72 hours later.
However, his journey didn’t end there, and thanks to compassionate shelter staff and an outpouring of support, Scrabble’s story took a hopeful turn.
Scrabble’s Story
This loving pup’s story began in Tennessee, where he faced an uncertain fate.
Along with his brother, Checkers, Scrabble had been in a high-kill shelter before being rescued and transported to Schultz’s Guest House in Massachusetts.

“He was in a high-kill shelter with his brother Checkers. Our foster carers in the south keep a close eye on euthanasia lists and pull dogs that they see have the opportunity to live a better life and be adopted out through our shelter,” said Merrill Fortier from Schultz’s Guest House to Newsweek.
Shelters nationwide face increasing numbers of surrenders, and Schultz’s is no exception.
The ASPCA reports that about 6.3 million pets are surrendered each year in the United States alone. Though shelters strive to match each pet with a carefully chosen family, returns like Scrabble’s are sadly not uncommon.
Fortier explained,”I’ve seen pets being returned anywhere between 24 hours, two weeks, and even years after adoption.“
In Scrabble’s case, he was returned because he was “too much” for his new family to handle.

A Second Chance for Scrabble
After everything he’d been through, Scrabble’s friends at Schultz’s Guest House were devastated by his return.

Fortier noted that adoption coordinators consistently stress that owning a dog is a lifelong commitment, but the thrill of bringing home a cute puppy can sometimes cloud judgment.
The shelter took to social media, posting a heartfelt Facebook post along with Scrabble’s story and a gentle reminder: “The first few days in a home are tough. They need time to decompress and settle into a new environment. On top of that, puppies are a time commitment. They are active, they need training, they need patience. Scrabble didn’t even get a chance.”
They also shared, “He’s one of the most affectionate dogs we’ve encountered in a while. He’s curious and intelligent and is bound to be a very loyal companion. This 7-month-old baby is hoping for another shot. Could you commit to this loving boy?“
Scrabble Finally Finds His Forever Home
Scrabble’s story touched the hearts of many, and it wasn’t long before it reached a new family in North Attleboro who knew he was meant to be with them.

This time, Scrabble—now Timmy—has found a true forever home with plenty of room to roam, two kitty siblings, and loving humans who are committed to him.

The shelter celebrated with a joyful update: “Scrabble (now Timmy) is heading to North Attleboro where he will have lots of land to roam and two kitty siblings. He’ll be walking 4 miles a day with dad. He’s already settling in beautifully and will have a long happy life with his new loving family!“
For Scrabble, a new life filled with love, joy, and companionship awaits.
