No One Gave This Depressed Senior Dog A Chance Until She Showed Up
OGB, short for Original Good Boy, was an eight-year-old dog who found himself in a shelter after his owner sadly had to give him up.
He first arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance in Washington, DC, and later moved to St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey.
Day after day, OGB sat quietly in his kennel, waiting for someone to notice him. But as time passed and no one came, his hope began to fade.
A Visit That Changed Everything
Just before Christmas, 70-year-old Susan Wright visited the shelter. She wasn’t planning on adopting—just looking.
But one pup caught her eye, not because he was excited to see visitors, but because he sat with his back to the door, not reacting to anyone.
At first, OGB didn’t seem like the “cute” dog Susan thought she might fall for. He had a serious face, a square head, and a strong, compact body.
But when she learned how long he had been waiting, and how deeply he had given up, something shifted in her heart.
OGB had once been loved deeply. His previous owner gave him his special name, but had to let him go because of personal struggles.
The staff at the shelter adored him. They said he was sweet, gentle, and always ready for belly rubs and ear scratches. When he was happy, he even did a little “happy dance.”
But OGB wasn’t the type to bark or beg for attention, which may be why he was often overlooked.
Building A Bond
Susan decided to spend time with him. She took him on little outings—walks around the block, park visits, and even trips for puppacinos.
It wasn’t easy at first. OGB didn’t pay much attention to her. He seemed more alert around men and large vehicles, which made Susan think his former owner might have been a man who jogged or drove a big truck.
So, she brought in a trainer to help them understand each other better. With time, OGB began to connect with her.
When her daughters came to meet him, they instantly loved him too. “It felt a little like introducing a date,” Susan joked with Newsweek.
The Moment Everything Changed
Then one day, Susan heard that someone else was interested in adopting OGB. That’s when she realized she couldn’t let him go.
She made the decision to adopt him herself.
Even though he wasn’t the kind of dog she thought she’d pick—he was older and looked different from her usual idea of a pet—she saw just how special he really was.
“If he was with me, he would always be in a good home,” she said.
She renamed him Ogee. He fit right into her home and began showing just how loving and gentle he could be.
A Truly Good Boy
Susan shared one touching moment when her daughter took Ogee for a walk.
They saw a little boy fall off his bike and hurt his wrist. While they called for help, Ogee gently lay by the boy and let him pet him, even licking his wrist as if to comfort him.
“Would all dogs do that, I don’t know. But we think it makes Ogee very special,” Susan said.
Now, Ogee enjoys every day with his new family, full of love, comfort, and tail wags.
After being overlooked for so long, he finally found what every dog deserves—a second chance and a place to call home.
