Man Customizes His Kayak To Take His Two Furry Pals On Adventures
David Bahnson, a retired surgeon from Rutland, Vermont, found a unique way to share his love for kayaking with his beloved Golden Retrievers, turning ordinary paddling trips into unforgettable adventures.
Here is their story.
Building A Custom Kayak For Canine Companions
It all started with Susie, the Bahnson family’s first Golden Retriever.
David realized that Susie could fit perfectly into the kayak’s baggage compartment, but to make her rides comfortable and dry, he modified the kayak by adding coaming around the compartment.
This adjustment allowed Susie to join David on the water safely and joyously, sparking a new passion for both.
Linda Expanded The Team With Ginger
When Linda Bahnson brought home another Golden Retriever, Ginger, the Bahnsons knew they couldn’t leave her behind on their aquatic adventures.
David went back to his workshop and modified the kayak again, creating a second compartment for Ginger.
This made room for the entire family to enjoy the kayaking trips together.
“It’s like a triple kayak, only there isn’t enough room for the paddlers to put their feet – but it’s perfect for a dog.” Bahnson told The Dodo.
Gliding The Waters All Together
Together, David, Susie, and Ginger often hit the water to enjoy little adventures.
Both dogs were well-trained and obedient, sitting quietly as they glided over the lake and waiting patiently for David’s signal before disembarking.
“They are trained to get in the kayak themselves on command. They sit down, and off we go. When we come ashore, they’ll stay seated until I tell them it’s OK to get out. They never hopped out into the water, actually.” Bahnson told The Dodo.
Their excursions were not just outings but bonding activities that all of them loved sharing.
A Lasting Tradition After Susie And Ginger
After many years of shared adventures, Susie and Ginger eventually passed away, leaving a void in the Bahnson household.
Their memories, filled with countless joyful moments on the water, remain cherished by David and Linda.
However, the kayaking tradition did not end with their passing. The Bahnsons welcomed a new Golden Retriever, Piper, into their lives, continuing the legacy of shared adventures and love for the water.
