Left Alone After His Owner Died, Chihuahua Faithfully Keeps Their Habits
Scooter is a 12-year-old Chihuahua who ended up in a shelter when his owner passed away.
After years of living in a loving home, he found himself in an unknown environment with other homeless dogs.
Just when his chances of finding a family were slim, everything changed for him when the shelter shared a photo of him on the Internet.
A Lonely Start At The Shelter
Scooter’s journey began with sadness when his owner passed away, leaving him all alone.
Without a family to care for him, he ended up at the Humane Society of Branch County in Michigan, old and with a hip injury.
But on his very first night at the shelter, Scooter did something that endeared him to the shelter staff—tucking himself under a blue blanket, with just his ears and sweet face peeking out.
This was his way of finding comfort in a strange new environment.
Scooter Finally Found A New Home Sooner Than Expected
The image of Scooter snug under his blanket touched many across the country after it was shared online.
Among the many who saw the photo was Jessica Lynn Howard, a previous adopter from the shelter.
Moved to tears by Scooter’s photo, she and her husband decided without hesitation that they needed to bring him home.
When Scooter arrived at his new home, he was warmly welcomed by not just the Howards but also by a diverse pack including two other Chihuahuas and two Heelers, making him feel as if he had always belonged there.
In his new home, Scooter thrived and quickly became known for his sweet and goofy nature.
Despite being a senior dog, he played like a young pup and enjoyed napping with his beloved blanket.
“When it’s bedtime ... he still ‘tucks himself in,'” Howard told The Dodo. “I’ve tried to tuck him in but he would rather do it himself. He has to get the covers just right. It’s really cute watching him.”
His new family adored him, and he formed special bonds with each member, becoming particularly close to Jessica’s husband, Tim.
A Touching And Useful Story For Old Pets
Scooter’s story had a broader impact, inspiring potential pet owners across the United States and even internationally.
Many people who learned about Scooter’s story reached out to adopt him, and when they learned he had found a home, they were motivated to visit their local shelters to adopt other senior dogs.
“When Scooter had been adopted many (...) people said that they were going to go to their local shelter and adopt a senior dog. So Scooter not only saved himself; I really believe that he saved the lives of other dogs all across the U.S. with his story.”
Scooter’s story highlighted the love and life that older dogs can bring to families, encouraging more people to consider them as worthy and delightful companions.
Jessica Howard hopes that Scooter’s story will inspire more people to adopt senior dogs or support animal shelters.
She believes that Scooter’s ability to touch so many lives through a single viral post shows the effect that one small dog can have on the world.
