Dog Finally Gets Adopted After 900 Days At Shelter Only To Be Returned In Less Than 24 Hours

After waiting years for a family, Sora finally had her chance at a forever home.
But within just 24 hours, she was back at the shelter, heartbroken once again.
A Long-Awaited Adoption
Sora, a beautiful black Labrador Pitbull mix, first arrived at Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California, in July 2021.
Her previous owner surrendered her after realizing they couldn’t provide the attention and training she needed.

“Sora is a sweet pup that has great energy. She is a perfect fit for any household with an active lifestyle. Sora is the dog you want to take on long walks or bike rides; trust us, she can keep up. Unfortunately, Sora has been in a kennel for almost 4 years,” the shelter wrote in their Facebook post.
Despite being affectionate and full of life, Sora spent nearly four years at the shelter without catching the attention of potential adopters.
So when someone finally showed interest in her, shelter staff were overjoyed. Sora left the shelter thinking she had found her forever home, but her happiness was short-lived.

The very next day, her new owner called the shelter, saying they wanted to return her. Just like that, Sora’s dreams were shattered, and she was back behind kennel bars.
A Heartbreaking Return
According to Sim Kaur from Valley Animal Center, Sora had no time to adjust to her new home before being overwhelmed with introductions to new family members.
“Sora did not get enough time to decompress in her new home and was introduced to new family members too quickly,” Kaur shared with Newsweek.
After already spending over 900 days in the shelter, this rejection must have been devastating.

Despite this setback, the shelter remains hopeful that the right person is still out there—someone who will give Sora the love and patience she desperately needs.
Living in a shelter can never compare to the warmth of a real home. While staff work hard to provide enrichment and love, it’s never quite enough.

Years in a kennel have left Sora with anxious behaviors, but her trainers believe that a stable home could completely change her life.
“According to our certified dog trainer, Mariah Prudhume, if she was able to get her into a loving home, her mental health would dramatically improve. With love and patience, she wouldn’t be the reactive dog she is today, and she would finally become the happy and goofy dog she is meant to be,” Valley Animal Center wrote on Instagram.

Thanks to generous donations, they were even able to cover the costs of her journey to Texas, where her new family was waiting with open arms.
Now, Sora finally has the forever home she always dreamed of—a place where she will be loved, cherished, and given the second chance she truly deserves.
