The Only Pup Not Adopted At The Shelter Finds Comfort Playing With ‘Imaginary Friends’

Every year on Black Friday, the Metro East Humane Society hosts an adoption event, giving dozens of shelter animals a chance to find their forever homes.
This year was the most successful one yet. A total of 94 animals, including 64 dogs, left the shelter with loving families, filling the staff with joy.
But amid the celebrations, a heartbreaking sight stood out—Frito, a sweet and deserving pup, was the only one who didn’t get adopted.
Frito Is The Only One Left
All the staff at Metro East Humane Society were really sad and disappointed when they realized Frito got overlooked.

“She is a very lovely and deserving girl, so it was a shame that she was overlooked and no one came forward for her. We all know how special Frito is, so to see so many people pass her by was upsetting,” said Ali Hillard, the program manager, shared with The Dodo.
As the shelter staff drove Frito back to the Metro East Humane Society in Madison County, Illinois, the atmosphere was different. The once-bustling shelter was now eerily quiet.

Frito looked around at the empty kennels, realizing her friends were gone. The staff comforted her, holding her close and reassuring her that her time would come.
Finding Happiness Despite It All
The next morning, instead of sulking, Frito decided to make the best of her situation.
Even though she had no fellow shelter dogs to play with, she ran around the yard with pure joy, tossing her stuffed toys in the air and chasing them as if they were her best friends.

The shelter staff shared a video on TikTok, captioning it, “Playing with her imaginary friends,” and it melted hearts everywhere.
She looked as happy as ever, the staff recalled, watching Frito’s playful energy shine through despite her circumstances.
Frito is a loving and affectionate pup who dreams of a family that will embrace both her silly and snuggly sides.

“Frito is really not a picky girl. Her ideal forever home would be any home looking for a dog that is a healthy mix of both sweet and cuddly while also being super silly and playful,” Hillard said.
Fortunately, Frito has since moved to a foster home, where she is finally experiencing the warmth and comfort she deserves.
The staff at Madison County—and now her foster family—are all cheering her on, hoping that the next time Frito leaves a shelter, it will be to her forever home.
