Woman Brings Her Dog To The Vet And Couldn’t Believe What The X-Rays Found
A routine vet visit for a worried pet parent turns into a jaw-dropping revelation.
Ham, a curious and mischievous Pug mix, had been unwell, but nothing could prepare her owners for the shocking discovery.
A Concerned Mom Takes Her Dog To The Vet
Ham, a lively two-year-old Pug cross, was normally full of energy. She would bark at the smallest of things, but lately, her mom, Victoria Northwood, noticed something was off.
Victoria was concerned about her pup’s unusual behavior, so she decided to take her to the vet.
Although the vet didn’t initially think it was anything major, he still advised her to bring Ham in as a precaution.
What followed was something neither of them could have ever imagined.
The Unbelievable Discovery
At Newton Clarke Veterinary Surgery, Ham was X-rayed right away. Initially, the vet noticed something unusual inside her stomach, but he couldn’t identify it at first glance.
After a closer inspection, he had an inkling of what it might be but refrained from voicing his thoughts to avoid alarming Victoria.
The vet quickly determined that Ham would need surgery to address the issue, so she was handed over to veterinary surgeon Emily Whitby.
After the procedure, Emily had some truly shocking news.
“Around 50 to 60 hairbands in total” were removed from Ham’s stomach, according to Emily. The weight of the hairbands was nearly 7 ounces, an astonishing amount for a dog that only weighed 2 pounds.
Victoria was both relieved that the surgery went well and stunned by the sheer volume of hairbands found inside her dog.
Victoria had noticed Ham eating hairbands on occasion, and some had even been found later in her stool. However, she never imagined her dog had consumed so many.
“We knew she ate the odd hairband as we had noticed them coming out the other end, but nothing prepared us for the amount they found in there,” Victoria shared with the BBC.
The vet team, meanwhile, was equally astounded by the discovery.
Despite the unusual and potentially dangerous situation, Ham had managed to get by without major issues, making the outcome even more surprising.
Back To Mischief And Lessons Learned
Luckily, Ham didn’t have to stay at the clinic for long and was soon recovering at home.
“She is back to causing mischief at home (and hopefully, no longer on the hunt for hairbands!),” NCVS posted on Facebook.
While Ham’s quick recovery was a relief, Victoria was determined to prevent a repeat of the incident.
“We were really shocked that this could happen and so grateful to the vets for their vigilance,” she said. “We are keeping a much closer eye on her now — it is such a relief that she is okay.“
