Bus Driver Investigates A Pile Of Trash, And Discovers It’s Moving
This story has a happy ending, but it could have gone tragic.
It all started when a vigilant bus driver, who spotted a pile of trash from the distance, took the time to investigate it.
When she got close, she was in for a surprise! It was not trash, but a pile of 6 black puppies abandoned on the side of the road.
A Surprising Discovery
It was a typical rainy day in St. Louis, Missouri; but for one observant school bus driver, it became anything but ordinary.
During a break between her routes, she noticed a dark, fluffy pile by the roadside.
Initially mistaking it for trash, she soon realized it was moving. Concerned for what might be a pile of helpless creatures, she immediately contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis.
The Race Against Time
Donna Lochmann, Chief Life Saving Officer at SRSL, responded to the call, understanding that every second counted.
Arriving at the scene, Donna was quickly drawn to the sound of whimpering. She discovered four puppies huddled together, shivering and desperate for help. Without hesitation, she scooped them into the warmth and safety of her vehicle.
The initial rescue, however, was incomplete.
The bus driver had reported six puppies, not four. Donna extended her search and soon found two more puppies hiding in nearby bushes, bringing the total to six frightened but now rescued souls.
Warm Baths and Full Bellies
Back at SRSL headquarters, the first order of business was to provide warmth and food to the soaked and shivering puppies.
“I gave them all warm baths to try to warm them up a little bit,” Donna recounted.
Afterward, they were fed wet food, which they devoured hungrily, quickly bloating their tiny, starved bellies.
A Litter of Lucky Pups
The puppies, estimated to be about 6 to 7 weeks old, were not only battling hunger but were also suffering from a ringworm infestation.
Despite their rough start, Donna and her team ensured they received the necessary care, and by that same night, all six puppies were placed in a foster home.
They were sent out in pairs to their foster homes, to ease their transition.
The puppies were affectionately given Irish names—O’Brien, O’Keefe, O’Neil, O’Hara, O’Mara, and O’Reily—in light of their rescue just before St. Patrick’s Day, symbolizing their stroke of luck in finding such timely help.
Thriving Against the Odds
One week after their rescue, the SRSL gave an update about the puppies on their Facebook page.
O’Brien and O’Reilly have joined a home that already had a dog, Gallery. Gallery had recently lost her own pups, so she has taken the O’pups as her own.
“We are amazed how much a little soap and a lot of love have transformed these scared little pups into normal, loving pets. They are getting noticeably bigger & stronger every day.” said foster mom Debi Morgan
O’Mara and O’Hara also joined a foster home that already had another dog, and they both love their big brother Eiffel.
And finally, O’Keefe and O’Neal were adopted by a foster mom who... also had another dog, Millie the Shepherd.
“These two have also started growling at each other and it is so funny to hear. They are starting to find their voices. They love to explore but the hardwood floors are a bit challenging for them.” said foster mom Jeanne Fogarty.
The Importance of Community Support
The resilience of these puppies turned what could have been a tragic story into one of hope & happy ending.
This heartwarming rescue highlights the critical role that community vigilance and quick reporting play in saving lives. It also helps shed light on the ongoing needs of organizations like Stray Rescue of St. Louis, which relies on donations and community support to continue their vital work.
Thanks to the quick thinking of a school bus driver and the dedication of SRSL, a rainy day rescue story got its sunny ending, reminding us all of the difference a little TLC can make in the lives of animals in need.
