Little Pup Who Can’t Walk Seeks A Family To Love Him As He Is
Petey, a small puppy, was found in a heartbreaking condition—soaked, weak, and freezing.
Abandoned on a damp blanket near a park, he and his baby brother were left alone without anyone to care for them. What Petey truly needed was love and acceptance, but instead, he was deserted.
A kind woman discovered Petey while walking her son home from school in California. Seeing the puppy’s distress, she knew he needed urgent care.
She didn’t realize it at the time, but Petey was indeed a special little dog.
A One-Month-Old Pup Saved At The Last Minute
When Petey was brought to the Sacramento SPCA in California, he was lethargic and barely moving. Sadly, his sibling didn’t survive and passed away shortly after arriving.
The shelter staff quickly gave Petey warm fluids and Karo syrup to stabilize his blood sugar.
As Petey’s condition improved slightly, he began to eat wet puppy food. He faced several health challenges, including ringworm and abrasions on his chin and neck, and he was severely underweight.
One issue puzzled his caregivers: Petey couldn’t stand without falling or walk properly.
Initially, it was assumed his struggles were due to malnutrition. However, after thorough tests, Petey was diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological condition that affects coordination and balance but does not worsen over time.
Growing Up With A Rare Condition
Both Petey and his caregivers needed to adjust to his unique condition. The SPCA team took great care to ensure his living space was safe, keeping him away from hazards like stairs and sharp furniture.
Elizabeth, Petey’s foster mom, who also volunteered with the SPCA, worked hard to create a comfortable and safe environment for him.
She came up with a creative solution to help Petey play safely: an inflatable pool where he could have fun without getting hurt. Unfortunately, Petey quickly put a hole in it, but the idea showed their dedication to his happiness.
Petey embraced his condition and began to enjoy life. He played with toys, ate eagerly, and loved to cuddle with Elizabeth. He relished the opportunity to meet new people and dogs whenever Elizabeth took him to work.
Despite his challenges, Petey was just like any other puppy—playful, curious, and full of joy. He learned to enjoy life in his own special way, despite his limitations.
Living His Best Life
The SPCA team was determined to find Petey a forever home with someone who could provide the love and care he needed. Fortunately, the perfect person came along, ready to accept Petey just as he was.
“This special guy has cerebellar hypoplasia, which made him a little difficult to place, but he’s finally found a family and can’t wait to start his new life,” the SPCA team shared on Facebook.
Today, Petey is thriving with his new owner, who loves him unconditionally. Once an abandoned puppy with slim chances of survival, Petey is now a joyful dog, bringing happiness to everyone around him with his playful antics and affectionate nature.
He truly is the happiest pup, living his best life.
