After surviving 15 months alone in a desolate field, an abandoned pit bull named Mama was terrified of trusting anyone again.

But with unwavering patience and love, one rescuer’s daily visits slowly broke through her fears, showing that even the most broken hearts can heal.

Danny Spanks, a radio DJ from Bakersfield, California, and the founder of A SafeFurr Place Animal Rescue, has dedicated years to rescuing abandoned dogs. His passion has always been helping frightened and neglected animals rediscover their trust in people.

When he first heard about Mama, a pit bull living alone in a remote area, he knew he had to step in.

Mama had been spotted by several people, living alone in an empty field by a road far from civilization. She had managed to survive for 15 months on her own.

Though no one knew exactly how she got there, Danny believed Mama had been used for breeding and then discarded.

“Dogs like Mama get pregnant, they have their babies, maybe mama nurses them for a certain amount of time and then mama is taken someplace and dumped,” Danny explained.

Mama had taken refuge near a pile of discarded items, including a mattress and broken springs.

Determined to help her, Danny set up a makeshift shelter and feeding station to ensure she wouldn’t wander too far.

A Journey Of Patience

Every day, Danny made the hour-long drive to visit Mama, bringing food and offering her the chance to approach.

But Mama was scared. She kept her distance, unwilling to come close.

For months, Danny persisted. He would sit quietly with his back to her, food nearby, and wait. Slowly, his patience paid off.

One day, Mama cautiously inched closer, sniffing Danny’s back before grabbing the food and running off. It was a small victory, but a sign that trust was building.

The routine continued for months, and Mama’s attitude began to shift.

She grew excited when she heard Danny’s car approaching, wagging her tail and running around in circles from a distance. Though she remained hesitant, her joy was unmistakable.

She cautiously approached Danny as he lay on the ground with treats in his hand. For the first time, she took food directly from him. Danny was thrilled, but he kept calm, not wanting to spook her.

“Every time she’s just next to me, and she has a smile on her face. I just take it in, and it means so much to me. That was always the goal, to have this dog trust me and love me the same way I love her,” Danny shared.

With her newfound happiness, Mama no longer needed to search for a forever home. Danny decided to keep her, ensuring she would never feel abandoned again.
