Woman Adopts Senior Pittie And Gives Her The Best Life Before She Passes
Sometimes, the bond between a person and a dog can form in an instant, leading to a love that changes both lives forever.
This is exactly what happened when McKinnley met Iris, a senior Pit Bull, who ended up transforming her heart and life in unexpected ways.
A Chance Meeting Leads To A Life-Changing Adoption
While scrolling through Facebook, McKinnley stumbled upon the Minneapolis Humane Society’s website, where a senior dog named Iris immediately caught her attention.

Despite Iris’s health issues and her status as a senior, McKinnley couldn’t get the dog off her mind.
“I just went to meet her. She was sick in the shelter but she just licked my face and I was like ‘What is going on? I am taking this dog home!‘” McKinnley shared, recalling the moment that started their journey together.
Soon after, she visited the shelter, and from the moment Iris licked her face, McKinnley knew she was taking her home.
A New Beginning For Iris
Once Iris, an 11-year-old Pit Bull, arrived at McKinnley’s home, it was as if she had found her second puppyhood.

Iris was full of energy, playing with her toys and even carrying them around wherever she went. She brought joy into the household and sparked something greater, an awareness of the unjust stigma surrounding Bully breeds.
“Iris sparked the flame for me about the bully breeds and I started to educate myself and I became really passionate about them and the misconceptions about their breed,” McKinnley said.
Iris’s time with McKinnley inspired a lifelong passion in her for advocating on behalf of Bully breeds.

A Connection That Lasts Beyond Life
When Iris passed, McKinnley adopted another Pit Bull named Petunia, feeling a deep connection between the two dogs.

“When I adopted Petunia, we were driving home for the first time and Petunia was sitting in the backseat of the car, panting, kind of nervous, not sure what was going on, and I was driving and I know it sounds crazy but Iris was in the passenger seat with me, its just, her soul was there. She sent me Petunia,” McKinnley shared.

McKinnley gave Iris the best final years, and in return, Iris inspired her to make a difference for other dogs.
While Iris may be gone, her memory lives on in the love McKinnley continues to give to other dogs like her.
