Three-Legged Dog Terrified Of Humans Surprises Everyone With A New Coat Color After Rescue
A group of children searching for kibble led a rescue volunteer from Sidewalk Specials to a heartbreaking sight—an abandoned, three-legged dog barely clinging to life.
He was weak, terrified of human touch, and had endured unimaginable suffering, but his journey was about to take an incredible turn.
A Fragile Soul In Need Of Help
The dog—later named Eddie—was completely emaciated and visibly scared of people. Life had been nothing but a struggle, leaving him with deep emotional and physical scars.

“He’d lost a leg, so it was extremely difficult for him to walk. He was extremely weak. When he arrived [at the rescue], his eyes were just fear and emptiness,” Janice, Eddie’s foster mom, shared with The Dodo.
A vet exam revealed that Eddie suffered from severe malnutrition, kidney issues, mange, and tick bite fever. His front teeth were completely worn down, likely from eating gravel to survive.
It was clear he had been alone for a long time, but his luck was about to change.

Eddie was taken into a warm and loving foster home with Janice and her husband, Rolf, who were determined to show him the kindness he had never known.
Just two weeks later, Eddie wagged his tail for the first time.

His eyes softened, and his healing journey truly began.
A Stunning Transformation
As the days passed, Eddie continued to improve, learning to trust the humans who cared for him. But something extraordinary happened that even his foster parents hadn’t expected.
Three months after his rescue, Eddie was no longer the same dog.

Not only was he happier and healthier, but his coat, once dull and patchy, had completely changed color—transforming into a beautiful chocolate brown.
“His happy place is in the bed I think he never had before. His second happy place is definitely the creek in the park. His ball is his security blanket. He’d never had a toy!” Janice shared.

It was heartwarming to see him experience joy for the first time, finally leaving his painful past behind.
A Bittersweet Ending
The rescue team worked hard to find Eddie a forever home, even creating a touching video to help him get adopted.
He was a well-behaved, easygoing, and loving pup—ready to start his new life.
But fate had different plans.

Tragically, Eddie suffered from organ failure shortly after his rescue and had to be put down.
“I think we can all agree that Eddie’s last three months, spent with his foster family, were the best thing that ever happened to him 💖 Respect to his foster family for giving Eddie the chance at happiness and prayers for your broken hearts,” Sidewalk Specials wrote on a Facebook post.
Eddie’s time was short, but he finally knew love. His foster parents adored him, and he will always hold a special place in their hearts.
