Sweet Dog Keeps Sneaking Out Of The Shelter Just To Be With Nursing Home Residents

Most shelter dogs wait patiently for someone to adopt them—but Scout had other plans.
Staying at the Antrim County Animal Shelter in Bellaire, Michigan, just didn’t feel right to him. So, late at night, he started slipping away and heading toward a nearby nursing home.
What surprised everyone was that this wasn’t a one-time thing. Scout kept escaping again and again, always finding his way back to the same place.
The Dog Who Wouldn’t Stay Put
For Scout, reaching the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility wasn’t a simple stroll. He had to climb multiple fences, cross a highway, and sneak through automatic doors.
He always managed to get into the facility late at night, and as soon as he did, he’d curl up on a cozy leather couch in the lobby and fall asleep.
At first, the nursing home staff took Scout back to the shelter. But after he continued to show up night after night, they realized something about their facility made Scout feel at home. They decided to welcome him as a permanent resident.
“When Scout continued to show up here, we thought maybe it was meant to be,” Jennifer Martinek from MBMCF said. “We’ve welcomed him to be a part of our family. This is where he belongs. He chose us,” added Stephanie Elsey, a clinical care coordinator.
A Comforter With A Big Heart
Scout quickly evolved from a simple resident to a loving and intuitive caregiver, capturing everyone’s heart.
“If you’re upset about something, or everything’s going wrong, he makes you feel better. Scout’s very happy here.” One resident at MBMCF shared.
Scout showed a special affinity for residents with terminal illnesses and dementia, providing them with extra care and comfort.
“We can’t imagine our lives without him! He completes our Meadow Brook family,” the MBMCF team posted on their official Facebook page.
Though Scout’s past is somewhat of a mystery, it’s clear he endured a tough life in an abusive household. Despite his difficult beginnings, Scout has shown an incredible ability to love and care for others.
