Pack Of Tiny Dogs Hiding Inside A Deflated Tire Finally Gets Noticed
A deflated tire under a freeway overpass in Muscoy, California, became an unlikely shelter for three tiny, vulnerable dogs.
Huddling together for comfort, they had little chance of survival, stranded in a remote spot with no one around to help.
But their luck changed when a passerby spotted them and decided to take action.
Rescue Efforts Begin
A man, having taken a wrong turn, noticed a white terrier lying on top of a pile of garbage.
Recognizing the dire situation, he immediately called Faith Easdale, a local dog rescuer with Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue.
Faith was familiar with this type of call, as abandoned dogs were not uncommon in the area.
“We do this all the time. We see dogs dumped in underpasses, fields, canyons, freeways, you name it — and that area is one of the worst. (..) Hardly anyone would go there or even see these dogs, and even if they had seen them, they would have kept on going. They just don’t care. It’s an everyday occurrence,” Faith shared with The Dodo.
Faith wasted no time and called Cassandra Aldridge, another rescuer, to check on the pups.
When Cassandra arrived, she found the first dog and quickly realized there were two more hidden inside the tire.
The pups were too weak to move, and Cassandra knew she had to get them out of the heat and into safety.
She carefully lifted the tire, pups and all, and placed them in her car to get them to a cooler environment.
When Faith arrived, she found the dogs too lethargic to move, but they were no longer hiding.
One by one, she coaxed them out of their crate, offering them cold water, which they eagerly drank. She wrapped them in blankets, giving them comfort after their harrowing ordeal.
“I stroked their heads and let them know that they were OK, and then I put [them] one by one in a crate. They just were so lethargic that they didn’t even want to run. But they were all so happy to be in that crate huddled together,” Faith recalled.
Her heart melted when she saw the protective behavior of one dog toward the other, who appeared to be pregnant.
Medical Care Was Much Needed
The pups were immediately rushed to a nearby veterinary clinic for medical care.
They were infested with fleas and ticks, dehydrated, and missing patches of skin from scratching.
The rescue team named them Michelin, Pirelli, and Kumho after tire brands.
“Pirelli and Kumho were both lactating, meaning they were still producing milk for puppies that were hopefully old enough to be weaned; Michelin was shut down and protective and is opening up as the days go by. The girls are so loving and seem to feel like royalty with their new ’dos,” said Hedy Alison, office manager of Camino Pet Hospital.
The dogs received necessary treatments, including vaccinations, microchips, spaying, neutering, and grooming. Afterward, they were moved to foster care to continue their recovery.
Finding Forever Homes
After a period in foster care, the pups were ready for adoption.
Michelin, who had seemed the most fragile when rescued, was the first to find a loving home.
“This tire baby was the one I was worried might not even survive the transport to the hospital. He seemed the most broken! He wouldn’t take the water offered and I knew we had to HURRY to get him help! Thankfully he recovered and was given that second chance! Just look how amazing he looks now. And he has a brand-new mama who will give him tons of attention“, Faith shared on Facebook.
Pirelli and Kumho were adopted together and now live in a mansion with a family who adores them.
These three dogs, once abandoned in a tire, now live safe, happy lives in their forever homes.
