Mourning Dog Mom Adopts A Shelter Pup She Believes Her Late Dog Sent Her
Nicole’s heart broke the day she lost Trixie, her soulmate dog and a senior American Bully she adopted at 8 years old.
Trixie spent her golden years surrounded by love and family before peacefully crossing the rainbow bridge.
In her final moments, she left behind a remarkable giftn a sign of love that would help heal her grieving family.
A Sign From Trixie
When Nicole and her brother visited the shelter to donate supplies, they weren’t expecting to meet a dog that would change their lives.
Among the barking dogs, one stood out—Rena, a quiet, mid-sized chocolate pup pressing against her kennel, craving affection.
“At the shelter, she was pressing her body up against the cage just looking for pets,” Nicole shared with GeoBeats Animals. “Trixie was also the only dog in the shelter who was not barking.“
Rena’s calm demeanor and soulful eyes reminded Nicole so much of Trixie that she felt an instant connection.
This sweet pup had endured her own share of heartbreak. Found as a stray in the DC area, Rena was adopted but returned to the shelter after her owner passed away.
The family’s housing situation made it impossible to keep her.
When Nicole met Rena at the New Jersey shelter, she was sure it was no coincidence.
“She came into our life through my past dog, Trixie,” Nicole said, convinced this was Trixie’s way of easing her family’s grief.
Although initially planning to foster Rena, Nicole and her family couldn’t resist her charm.
Healing Through New Joy
Rena quickly settled into her new home, bringing happiness and laughter back into Nicole’s life.
“She carried the same characteristics as Trixie, like her love for tennis balls, wiggling in the grass, and lounging in the sun. I truly believe Trixie sent us this dog and is watching over,” Nicole wrote on Instagram.
Rena, a playful three-year-old, was the perfect counterbalance to Trixie, who spent her golden years as a calm and restful companion.
Her quirky personality shines through, earning her the affectionate nickname “chocolate cow” thanks to her floppy ears and unique markings.
“It’s interesting, Trixie had specific spots outside that she always gravitated towards. Sometimes I’ll catch Rena near those spots just sniffing around,” Nicole shared, touched by these subtle reminders of her late dog.
Rena’s special ability to connect with people needing comfort has been a source of healing for Nicole’s family.
One day, Nicole looked up Rena’s name and was overcome with emotion.

“I randomly decided to google this foster pup’s name to understand the meaning and was happily shocked to find that it had the same meaning as Trixie’s name…‘joy,’” she revealed in an Instagram post.
The parallel between their names and their similarities was the final confirmation Nicole needed—Trixie had truly sent Rena as a gift.
Losing a beloved pet is a heartbreaking experience, but Nicole’s story shows how love can come full circle.
Rena has not only mended Nicole’s broken heart but also filled her home with the joy and laughter that Trixie once brought.
