Shelter Dog Desperately Hugs Everyone He Meets, Wishing They'd Adopt Him

Stray dogs spend their days wandering, scavenging for food, and hoping to find a safe haven.

Tanner was one of those strays, roaming the streets of Houston, Texas, and waiting for a hero to rescue him.

That hero finally appeared, and Tanner was taken to a local shelter. Soon, the staff discovered that he wasn’t just any dog – he was something special.

Loving Dog Facing Euthanasia

Tanner longed for a family to call his own. Despite his loving nature, three weeks passed without anyone adopting him. The overcrowded shelter had no choice but to add his name to the euthanasia list.

Local dog advocate Madeline Garvis Smith met Tanner and was instantly smitten. His affectionate nature and the way he hugged her melted her heart.

“He was pure love; almost starved for attention. Putting him back in his kennel was the hardest part because I knew he was just so lonely. I meet a lot of dogs, but some just pull on your heartstrings more than others. Tanner was one of them,” said Garvis Smith according to The Dodo.

Determined to save him, Garvis Smith shared Tanner’s story on her Instagram on August 26th, 2023. She wanted the world to know about this loving dog who just needed a chance.

Tanner was always eager for love, jumping into volunteers’ laps and craving affection. Despite being a year old, he loved being held like a baby.

A Race to Save Tanner

Garvis Smith urgently called for a local foster to give Tanner a temporary home. Her plea caught the attention of Kari, a foster mom, who quickly offered to take him in.

When it was time to leave, Tanner made sure to hug his shelter friends goodbye, as if to thank them for their care. His tail wagged with joy as he stepped outside with Kari.

In the car, Kari kissed Tanner, relieved and happy that his life was spared.

At his foster home, Tanner was initially shy, but he soon warmed up, soaking in the love and affection from his foster family.

Soon, Tanner will be moving to the Animal Rescue Network of New England in New Hampshire, where he will stay until he finds his forever home.

This gentle dog has so much love to offer we do not doubt that he will find the perfect family to enjoy his sweet hugs.
