Police Dog Fired For Being Too Friendly Thrives In His New Position

In 2016, Gavel was just a six-week-old German Shepherd puppy with a promising future.

He was one of 40 police puppies in training in Queensland, Australia, destined to join the elite ranks of the Queensland Dog Squad. With his impressive pedigree, everyone believed he would soon be catching criminals.

However, Gavel’s path took an unexpected turn.

Instead of showing a knack for patrols, he had a strong preference for pats and treats. As a result, he didn’t pass the police academy.

But his journey didn’t end there; it led him to an even better opportunity.

A Smart Career Move

Gavel arrived at the Government House in Queensland in April 2016, ready for a year of training to become a police dog. He was equipped with basic obedience training and a formal uniform bearing the Queensland Police Service insignia.

Despite his training, it became clear that Gavel was more interested in cuddles than crime-fighting.

After a year, Gavel’s report card from the police handlers indicated that he “did not display the necessary aptitude for a life on the front line.”

Fortunately, the Governor of Queensland saw potential in Gavel that the police academy missed. The Governor decided to adopt Gavel and give him a new role.

Thriving As A Vice-Regal Dog

In February 2017, Gavel was officially appointed as Queensland’s first Vice-Regal Dog. He even “pawed” his own contract!

His duties included supporting the Governor, the Honorable Paul de Jersey, by greeting guests, leading tours, attending formal ceremonies, and simply being adorable.

Gavel wore a tailored ceremonial coat adorned with the state emblems of Queensland.

Over time, he outgrew four ceremonial coats, each showcasing the insignia of the Queensland Police Service. He quickly became a beloved member of the Government House family and a symbol of joy for everyone he met.

He was thriving in his new role, proving that there are many ways to serve and bring happiness.

In late October 2021, Gavel officially retired after 40 (canine) years of service. He received abundant love from His Excellency, Mrs. de Jersey, and his handler, who continues to care for him in retirement.

He continues to enjoy his well-deserved rest at the Government House estate in Brisbane, living a life filled with love, treats, and the affection he adores.
