Homeowner Heartbroken To Find A Severely Matted Dog On Her Doorstep Asking For Help

A neglected dog had been suffering in silence for who knows how long—until someone finally noticed.
What started as a normal day for one California woman quickly turned into a heartwarming mission to save a life.
A Shocking Sight On The Doorstep
When Rena Perkens Schlueter looked outside her home in Orange, California, she saw something she couldn’t quite figure out.
It was a furry shape, so matted and dirty that she couldn’t even tell what kind of animal it was.

Then, it hit her—it was a dog in terrible condition. Her heart sank.
The dog’s fur was tangled into thick mats, and he looked like he hadn’t been cared for in years.
Rena tried to help him, but the poor pup was scared. He jumped up and ran off before she could get close.
She searched briefly, but he was gone. Still, she quietly hoped he’d come back.
Later that day, he did. He was in the same spot, still in bad shape—but this time, he didn’t run.
A Transformation Worth Cheering For
The dog seemed more open to help, but he was still nervous. Every time Rena came near, he barked out of fear.
Not wanting to scare him more or risk injury, she called Animal Control.

“I tried to approach him, but I know he was very scared and probably in pain,” Rena later shared with Rocky Kanaka. “I really didn’t know what to do, and Animal Control was the only option. I called them and uploaded a picture and they deemed it an emergency. They had someone out within probably 20 minutes.”
While she waited, Rena posted his photo in a local Facebook group to raise awareness. That simple post would later change everything.
Animal Control quickly picked the dog up and brought him to OC Animal Care. Because he was so distressed, the team gently sedated him before starting his grooming and medical check.

Underneath all that matted fur was a small dog—just 12 pounds and around 10 years old.
Luckily, he had no major health issues. And once he was cleaned up, he looked like a completely different dog.
A Happy Ending Right Around The Corner
After his transformation, the shelter team expected the senior pup to stay a while. Older dogs, especially those with a rough past, usually take time to find homes.
But they were wrong.

The same Facebook post that Rena had shared reached someone special: Deanna Briggs, a member of the local group.
As soon as she saw his picture and read his story, she knew she had to adopt him.

In less than a day, he went from being alone and afraid to being part of a loving forever home.
