Woman Thought She Adopted The Perfect Dog And Then Learns He Has A Special Surprise

Robin Wagner from Burlington, Vermont, and her boyfriend had been looking for the perfect dog for a while without much luck.

But when Robin stumbled across Blaze’s adoption photo online, she knew right away that he was the one.

It was love at first picture.

Many Unexpected Surprises

“We didn’t even know about the teeth before he came home. That was a glorious surprise,” Robin shared with GeoBeats Animals.

But that was just the beginning.

Blaze, a German Shepherd and Greyhound mix, had sunken eyes — but the shelter believed he could still see.

Later, an eye specialist confirmed Blaze was fully blind in his right eye and would need surgery to try saving vision in his left.

“About two weeks post-surgery, I was on a walk with Blaze and he just started to walk into everything. I rushed him back to the ophthalmologist only to find surgery was not successful, and Blaze was not also blind in his left eye,” she said.

Eventually, they had to remove his right eye due to repeated infections.

“And I think I was more put off by the change than he was,” she added.

Helping Blaze recover took time. He had weighed just 50 pounds when adopted but eventually reached a healthy 80.

Once he was physically better, they began working on his anxiety and reactivity, caused in part by his sudden blindness.

“We’re working very closely with a trainer to help Blaze feel a little less apprehensive about the world,” Robin shared.

They started using more verbal cues to help him understand his surroundings.

“Obviously, we didn’t anticipate the number of challenges we would face after we adopted Blaze. But given the chance to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing. He’s my very best friend and I count my lucky stars every single day for him,” she said.

Luckily, Blaze has help at home. Their cat Satin acts like a guide, helping Blaze avoid bumping into things.

“Every time he’d be walking towards her, she would meow. She would meow, and he would stop and redirect himself,” Robin told People.

She might not be the cuddliest cat, but Satin’s meows have made life much easier for her blind dog friend.
