Shelter Dog Learns He Has A Long-Lost Sister, And Can’t Wait To Meet Her
Meet Vardis, a 3-year-old rescue pup from Chicago whose early years were marked by uncertainty and transitions.
Vardis spent his puppyhood moving between shelters and foster homes, searching for stability and love.
Until one day, he found where he belonged.
From Shelter to Shelter
In 2021, Vardis’s journey took him to One Tail At A Time (OTAT) in Chicago.
He arrived there with little known about his past, other than his need for urgent medical care due to pneumonia.
Thanks to the diligent care at OTAT, Vardis made a full recovery and soon showcased his loving and lively spirit.
When Vardis was strong enough, he was placed in his first foster home with Lynsey.
It was with her that Vardis learned the comforts of a loving home, easing into a life of regular exercise and affection.
Curious about his background, Lynsey used Embark’s Breed+ Health kit to uncover that Vardis was part golden retriever, part American bully and part Bulldog.
This newfound knowledge about his breed mix was later shared with his next foster mom, Jessica Jones, who continued to nurture Vardis’s friendly and extroverted nature.
A Surprise from the Past
Vardis’s life took an exciting turn when Lynsey was contacted by another dog owner who used the same DNA test.
It turned out that Vardis had a sister named Brunch who was also from Chicago Animal Care and Control.
Overjoyed by this discovery, Jones arranged for Vardis and Brunch to meet, hoping for a positive reunion despite their individual quirks with other dogs.
“I was a little nervous leading up to the meeting because Brunch’s family had indicated that Brunch can be a little selective when meeting new dogs, and Vardis also has had mixed experiences with meeting other dogs,” Jones told The Dodo.
The siblings’ meeting was nothing short of magical. They recognized each other instantly, bonding over playful antics and shared snacks.
Their similar play styles made the reunion a delightful experience for everyone involved, particularly when they energetically chased each other around the yard.
Looking for Love
Although Vardis has enjoyed his time with Jones and meeting his sister, he was still in search of his forever home.
Best suited as an only pet where he can be the center of attention, Vardis’s ideal home would be one filled with love and the opportunity to be the cherished companion he strives to be.
Jones speaks fondly of Vardis, describing him as the “sweetest, cuddliest 70-pound lap dog you can find.” His gentle nature and capacity for love make him an exceptional candidate for someone looking for a devoted and affectionate pet.
Vardis Finds His New Furever Home
Vardis had spent over three years living on the streets, moving from shelter to shelter, and going from one foster home to another.
But in March 2023, he was finally adopted!
His new dad renamed him Bo, and together they went back to their living home in Berwyn, Illinois.
