Retiring Police Dog Gets Final Radio Call For His Retirement

Quentin & Vilo have created a strong bond over the years, but now is the time to say goodbye.

Vilo is a German Shepherd-Malinois, working for the Orem Police Department. After 3 years of exceptional service, it’s time for a last radio call before retirement.

The Beginning of a Bond

The story of K-9 Vilo and his handler, Quentin, is a tale that starts on rocky grounds.

When Quentin first met Vilo, the K-9 was wary, growling through the partition as they drove home.

“What did I do? How am I going to get this dog out without getting bitten?” Quentin wondered.

But despite the initial tension, a strong bond formed quickly between the two, a bond built on mutual trust and affection.

A Partnership Formed Through Challenges

Vilo wasn’t just any dog; he was trained to find drugs and apprehend suspects, with a particular zeal for the latter.

His handler Quentin recalls their first intense call together, feeling immense pride in Vilo’s performance.

“It’s almost like being proud of your son,” he says, acknowledging how these experiences solidified their training and trust in each other.

Over three years, Vilo’s skills in tracking down suspects proved invaluable, with Quentin acknowledging the life-and-death situations they often faced together.

Thankfully, Vilo & Quentin were never injured, and Vilo ended his career with a clean record.

The Weight of Decision

Quentin speaks to the depth of their partnership, noting the heavy decisions he had to make, knowing that sending Vilo into danger could mean not having him return.

This forged a brotherhood between them, a trust so profound it’s hard to explain unless experienced firsthand.

A Bittersweet Retirement

After years of service and having had three handlers, it was time for Vilo to retire.

A special radio call marked his final 10-42, signifying the end of his duty. The City of Orem acknowledged his five years of dedicated service, over 300 deployments, and the countless dangers he had faced to keep his handler and the community safe.

It was a moment of mixed emotions for Quentin, fearing the loss of his companion and not wanting to break their bond.

Reunion & A New Chapter

A few months post-retirement, Quentin received the news that would bring Vilo permanently into his family, joining his “little wolf pack” at home.

This reunion was one of Quentin’s happiest moments, solidifying the fact that Vilo was more than a service dog; he was a beloved member of the family.

Quentin’s love for Vilo shines through as he talks about their life together post-service, emphasizing the unique bond they share.

“He’s been my best friend ever since... It’s nothing but love.”
