Drew was captivated by him and wanted to adopt him right away. Unfortunately, another family had already planned to adopt Dennis, leaving Drew disappointed.

Determined to help the lovable dog, Drew asked if he could foster Dennis until the adoption was finalized.

The shelter staff warned Drew that he would likely become attached to Dennis, making it hard to part with him later. But Drew didn’t mind; he just wanted to give Dennis a loving home, even if it was temporary.

Drew Finally Got His Way

As time passed, Drew and Dennis grew inseparable. The bond they formed was undeniable. So when the call came from the shelter asking Drew to return Dennis, he was heartbroken. It felt like losing a part of himself.

“I was devastated. I couldn’t even function. I felt like I had literally lost something, I was mourning, almost. It was a weird feeling,” he told The Dodo.

Drew couldn’t bear to say goodbye, so he pleaded with the shelter to ask the other family if he could keep Dennis.

Fortunately, when the family saw the videos and photos of Drew and Dennis together, they realized how strong their connection was and decided to let Drew adopt him.

For Drew, this was a dream come true, one of the happiest moments of his life.

Living together, Dennis continued to “talk” to Drew in his unique way, charming everyone he met. Drew often had to explain to people that Dennis was just being himself—a happy, expressive dog.

Reflecting on his time with Dennis, Drew realized how much his life had changed for the better.

“Before I had him (...) I don’t think I knew how to, like, love properly. (...) He’s taught me what real, actual love and friendship mean,” he admitted.
