Loving Couple Adopts Blind Shelter Dog Then Surprises Them
Meet Virgil, a sweet puppy born blind in a shelter in Louisiana.
Like his fellow shelter mates, Virgil dreamed of finding a loving forever home.
Adapting To His New Environment
A kind foster family in Ohio took Virgil in, showering him with love and care. As he grew, it was clear he was ready for a permanent family.
That’s when Emmeline and her husband saw Virgil and instantly fell in love.
Even though they didn’t know much about caring for a blind dog, they did their research and prepared for his arrival.
At just three months old, Virgil joined their family.
They were initially worried about how he would adjust, but all fears vanished once he arrived. Virgil fit right in, quickly exploring the yard and playing with his new siblings, Biscotti, Carragher, and Stevie. His bravery amazed his new parents.
Virgil’s independence was clear from the start. He even insisted on climbing the stairs by himself! He quickly memorized the layout of the house, moving around effortlessly.
Emmeline shared how people are often shocked when they learn he’s blind.
“…We have to remind people that he is blind because they have no idea,” she explained, adding that Virgil was born without his retinas, so he’s never seen anything.
A Natural-Born Leader
Besides being incredibly smart, Virgil is affectionate, showering his parents with hugs and kisses.
He’s also a leader among his siblings, confidently taking the lead during their hikes, despite not being able to see.
Emmeline joked, “He thinks he needs to be out front showing our other dogs how to do it.”
During hikes, Virgil wears a shirt to protect his skin from grass allergies.
His mom believes that trust and communication are key to making blind dogs happy and confident.
Virgil loves exploring off-leash, knowing he can trust his family to guide him with commands when needed. Emmeline shared on Instagram how rewarding it is to see Virgil explore, as it reflects the trust they’ve built together.
Virgil’s family is incredibly thankful to have him. In fact, he inspired them to foster other special-needs dogs, paying forward the love they’ve received. Virgil has even helped them better understand human disabilities.
Emmeline said, “People with disabilities, dogs with disabilities can do literally anything.”
