Early one morning, Chris Dewerker, the chief officer of the Michigan Humane Society (MHS), and his team were already on patrol when they received an urgent call.
A homeowner reported that a puppy had fallen into a pipe behind their house, and it was clear that time was running out.

When the team arrived at the scene, they were greeted by the sight of the puppy’s worried mom, her eyes filled with fear.
The desperate cries of the trapped puppy could be heard through two small holes in the house. It was a race against time.
A Delicate Rescue
The team quickly realized this rescue would be more challenging than they had hoped. The puppy was trapped deep in the underground pipes, and simple tools weren’t going to cut it.
Chris knew they needed to dig, but even after creating a sizable hole, the puppy was still out of reach—about six feet underground.
